Expedition 02 : MOROCCO

Region : Africa

Project focus : Permaculture & Sustainability / Intercultural creative collaboration

Our second artist team will be traveling to Morocco in April 2018 to work within the permaculture project of Dar Slimane. Artists' will be investigating regional environmental issues and producing sculptural pieces such as pigeon towers, rainwater collection structures and bug houses that will directly interact with the land and provide essential elements needed for the continued development of the location and the surrounding communities. Our friends at The Heritage Museum / Le Musée du Patrimonie will graciously open their doors to the team to provide inspiration and a deeper understanding of the indigenous Berber culture. This opportunity for research will prove essential in the later production of the artists work and will guarantee an accurate and respectful representation of the Berber and Moroccan people. The final component of the journey will involve a collaboration with the incredible Eve Branson Foundation. The creative endeavor between the visiting artists and the foundation's artisans will merge the Contemporary with the Traditional resulting in works of art that are symbolic representations of cultural acceptance, diversity and the power of intercultural dialogue. We could not be more grateful to Dar Slimane, the Eve Branson Foundation and The Heritage Museum for their willingness to collaborate, their enthusiasm and their vision.

PROJECT PARTNERS

Dar Slimane / Art Slimane

Dar Slimane is home to a 16 year old olive grove, animal sanctuary, permaculture project in the outskirts of Marrakech, Morocco. The location welcomes international artists working in visual art, installation, film and music. The establishments mission is to provide ongoing functional relationships between artists, environment and community.  While fostering a sustainable and holistic approach to living, it became innate that Dar Slimane open its doors to artists cognizant with a deep respect for nature while seeking to integrate art with the natural world for functionality and pleasure.  Similarly was the inspiration to begin a permaculture garden in 2016 within the already established olive grove with the motivation to achieve sustainable gardening techniques and optimal water efficiency that can then be used as a model to teach and inform local farmers and the community at large.

Eve Branson Foundation

Eve Branson is a woman bursting with entrepreneurial spirit, unfaltering determination and a great sense of humour. In 2005, she founded the Eve Branson Foundation, with the goal of setting up income-generating projects for Berber communities in Morocco. Today, the Eve Branson Foundation is dedicated to improving and enriching the lives of young people in the Atlas Mountains where Eve's son Sir Richard Branson owns a retreat, the Kasbah Tamadot . Eve and her small team have established three craft centres where young people can participate in training programmes and access tools and resources to learn artisan skills such as woodworking, tailoring and weaving.  Participants create handmade marketable gifts to sell to visitors, generating a small income for themselves and their families.   Eve also personally spearheads grassroots community initiatives that aim to promote healthcare, tackle environmental issues and improve access to education. Eve’s vision is for these unique Berber communities to thrive for future generations.
